Gained and lost in translation
The Mysteries of Translation by Wendy Lesser.

I liked her examples. I love Murakami, but sometimes I don't like bits of the translations. The flow sometimes feels stilted. Is it the author or the translator? It would be nice to be able to read japanese and find out, but alas, I am an american.

I also loved the new Translations of Dostoyevsky, I always recommended them to all who asked when I worked at the bookstore.

1st post from iBook

I have had a pretty hectic week. On Thursday at 9am I had my wisdom teeth removed from my head.

I don't recommend it.

The procedure went well. 30 minutes after I sat down it was finished. (Of course to me those 30 seemed like 10, I went deep.) I didn't feel a thing, not til 2 hours after I got home. So I took my pain meds, and felt a little better, but not much.

My friend Ken drove me to and from my doctors, so I have to thank him. I may have felt great after the procedure and I may have felt coherent but it was good to have someone there to drive me home anyway.

My iBook came around noon the same day. I am just now getting around to playing with it. That is because I really couldn't do shit for the last 2 days.

I have a craving for deep dish pizza now. I don't know why. The problem is, I still can't eat solid foods yet. Soup, soggy crackers, oatmeal, and eggs. I didn't eat for 24 hours, and I felt it.

Now back to fooling around with my new machine.

Books found on front porch
I came home today exhausted.

I brightened when I saw that I had 2 packages.

1 expected book,
You Shall Know Our Velocity by Dave Eggers. Which looks damn good.

1 unexpected book. Haruki Murakami's The Wind-up Bird Chronicle Reader's Guide by Matthew Strecher. Which was sent to me unknowingly by Keith. It is always nice to get unexpected mail. Thanks Keith.

I really have to start sending various weird items by mail again, its been too long.

Oh Also: You all do know that Murakami is my all time favorite living author, don't you? Good. Read his works.
